Pay attention to your Desires!  Our desire to be holy and dedicated to the mission God has for us in the Church comes from God!  It usually starts out strong at the beginning of Lent. However, the fulfillment of our desire to do good is often impeded in many ways; personal sin, human limitations, conflict, etc.  We come face to face with the truth that we cannot do it alone.  That is GOOD!  We NEED God!  That is how God made us – to need His Grace, His Life in us!

Jesus tells us, “Ask and you will receive”.  So, let us express our desire in prayer about wanting to live more faithfully the Mission He has for us in the Church.  To receive the blessings God has in store for us this Lent, we need to refocus first on our Relationship with the Blessed Trinity.  It is only in receiving the Holy Spirit, who is the Love between the Father and the Son, that we can become holy.  Renewed in our relationship that the Father gives us in Jesus, our Identity as beloved children of the Father is strengthened with in us.  That relationship gives us our identity and enables us to do the Mission of God with conviction and joy.

So, take a moment each day this Lent to get in touch with and simply express the main desire of your heart before God.  Our loving Father, who is always with us in the present moment and who places the good desires in our hearts, will make them grow through our prayerful expression.

As Pope Benedict taught, “Man was created for greatness – for God himself; he was created to be filled by God.  But his heart is too small for the greatness to which it is destined.  It must be stretched.  ‘By delaying [his gift], God strengthens our desire; through desire he enlarges our soul and by expanding it he increases its capacity [for receiving him]’.”

(Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, SPE SALVI #33)
