The Book of Revelation, also known as the Apocalypse of John, is a dense, compact, and all-encompassing work. This apocalyptic writing addresses the end of history and time. Given through the visions of John, much of its meaning is veiled behind the symbolism that characterizes apocalyptic literature. Are these visions to be taken literally as prophecies of the future? Or are they merely imaginative insensibility?
In this Bible Study, we will explore the context, structure, and major theological motifs of the Book of Revelation. Particular attention will be given to the genre of apocalyptic literature (as seen in both biblical and extra-biblical sources), the historical circumstances in which Revelation was written, and the eschatological theology that informs modern interpretations.
We’ll also reflect on what Revelation’s eschatological themes mean for believers today. Above all, we’ll approach this study with faith in the promise at its beginning: “Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy…” (Revelation 1:3)
